Peru
Peru is a country with more than 10,000 years of history. It was the seat of the fabulous Inca Empire, but long before that, ancient civilizations bequeathed to the world superb samples of a glorious past like Caral; the royal tombs of Sipan, the most lavish burial of America; the enigmatic Nasca lines; or the portentous Kuelap fortress.
An exquisite territory, with a cuisine positioned as one of the best in the world. A rainbow of sounds, flavors and colors that are manifested in more than 50 native languages still in use, thousands of dances and ancestral musical instruments that can be seen and heard in large festivals and processions. Peru is a country that encompasses infinite destinations and is home to millions of people who are waiting for it with open arms.
GEOGRAPHY
Peru is located in the western part of South America. It borders Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast and Chile to the south. Its territory is made up of diverse landscapes: the valleys, altiplano and high peaks of the Andes Mountains spread out towards the desert coast in the west and the Amazon in the east.
The extension of the Peruvian territory reaches 1,285,215 km². Peru is determined by the presence of the Andes Mountain Range, which crosses the territory from the South to the North, configuring three clearly differentiated areas: The Coast, the Highlands and the Jungle.
CLIMATE
Peru's climate is very varied due to its size and the difference in altitude between different parts of the country. In general, we can say that there are three types of climate, according to the area of the country:
COIN
The official currency of Peru is the Nuevo Sol divided into 100 cents. It circulates in coins of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles and in bills of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Nuevos Soles.
VOLTAGE, FREQUENCY AND PLUG/OUTLET TYPE IN PERU
Electricity in Peru is 220 Volts. Standard outlets accept round prongs; some have dual-voltage outlets which take flat prongs. Even so, your adapter may need a built-in surge protector.
TIME ZONE
UTC-5.
LANGUAGE
The official language is Spanish. In some areas, Quechua, Aymara and the other indigenous languages are also predominant. Spanish is spoken by 80.3 per cent of the population, Quechua by 16.2 per cent, other indigenous languages by 3 per cent and foreign languages by 0.2 per cent of the population.
ECONOMY
Peru's mineral wealth is the country's most important resource and largest source of income. Gold, silver, iron, lead, coal and copper, among others, abound in the various regions. Peru also has oil resources. Agriculture also occupies a significant role in the country's economy and the production of corn, cereals, cotton, potatoes, rice and sugar cane are important, as well as coffee, onions, garlic and tropical fruits. Other important sectors for the country's economy are tourism, fishing and manufacturing.
Travel tips and suggestions
1. Best Time to Travel
The best season to travel to Peru will depend on the activity you want to do. If your plan is to travel to Peruvian beaches, many of which are near valleys and deserts, the climate is generally quite good throughout the year without being too extreme for heat or cold, however, the ideal months to visit this destination are between December to March.
On the other hand, if you want to visit the mountain area, in the famous Andes, the climate is very varied and is dominated by its different heights. In the months of June, July, August and September you can enjoy more days of sunshine in this area.
In the Amazon area of Peru, you will find two outstanding seasons. The months of heavy rain between November to March, then the season of low rainfall from April to October, without leaving the high humidity that has the area throughout the year.
2. What to wear
The country has many places of tourist interest, so it will be like making several trips in one. Depending on your tastes and preferences you will pack different things, it all depends on the places you want to visit and the activities you want to do there.
For example, in the Amazon it is hot and humid, while at the highest points of the Andes it is freezing cold. You will also need mountain equipment for your hiking routes, especially comfortable shoes. So, make a good planning considering the weather and the activities to be done.
3. What to do
The most visited places by tourists are: the city of Lima and its historical center; Cuzco which is characterized by its Inca and colonial architecture; the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Machu Picchu; Arequipa for its historical center; and finally Puno by Lake Titicaca. The main tourist circuit of the country is the southern circuit, which includes cities like; Ica, Nazca, Pisco, Paracas, Arequipa, Chivay, Puno, Cuzco, Ayacucho and Puerto Maldonado. All these places have architectural, cultural and natural attractions of great importance.
4. Other facts and tips
Best things to do in the area
1. Visit The Uros Island
The Uros Island is a group of artificial islands that are located in Lake Titicaca. These were created by the Uros, who were an ethnic group before the Incas, originally from Bolivia. To escape from the wars, they built these islands and took refuge in them.
Nowadays, these lands are inhabited by families and each one owns its own plot of land. You can visit them by taking a tour and meet the families living there. These families currently live from handicrafts and tourism.
2. Visit Moray Ruins
They are an impressive archaeological complex located 74 kilometers from the city of Cusco and 3,500 meters above sea level. This area stands out for showing a series of unique circular platforms that look like amphitheaters. The ruins of Moray were built on retaining walls and it is believed that they were used by the Indians as an agricultural research center and for astronomical observation.
3. Visit The Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs (figures built on hillsides or plains) located in the Nazca Desert. They were created by an ancient culture. These designs stand out for the perfection with which they were made. They are wonderful to look at and impressive for their dimensions. These sculptures were declared a world heritage site.
