I was assigned to a group of four golfers to act as a judge. One of the players in my assigned group only had one arm, two prosthetic legs and legally blind. I will be the first to admit that I thought this to be a helpless situation and wondered how he could possibly hit the ball! He was allowed to have his mother guide his shots. From the very first tee-off, he hit the ball accurately and consistently. His mother gave simple directions including distance. I have never seen anyone hit a golf ball with only ONE arm. It quickly became apparent that he was going to have a very successful round. He placed in top 3. I couldn’t believe it. We played at a Par 3 course in Markham (I believe). I can’t remember his final score other than it was close to par.
I also won that day. I won the knowledge that we can never pre-judge someone’s abilities, no matter what their “apparent” handicap is. Anything is possible with the right frame of mind, determination and the will to succeed.
